The Importance of Self-Care When Caring For A Loved One

Treat Yourself Kindly During Difficult Times

Whether someone you care about is receiving cancer treatment, or you are looking after an aging parent, caring for an ailing loved one is not an easy task. Seeing someone you love suffer can take a toll on your emotional and physical well being, so it is important that you set aside the time for your own self-care in these more difficult times for you and your family. As much as you want to provide the best quality care, make sure that you are tending to your own needs as well so you can be present and available for the special people in your life.

Call Up a Friend

Friendships are important during difficult times, and it’s important to remain social and keep up a sense of connection with the people you care about, even if it’s been a while since you last spoke. Call up a friend on the phone to catch up. Better yet, invite your friend to meet in person, so you can spend some much needed time together.

Catch a Movie

Take yourself out to the new movie you have been wanting to see– and don’t forget the popcorn and soda. Going to a film is a great way to get out of the house and take your mind off of things for a while. Everyone deserves a break now and then. This is a chance for you to enjoy yourself, and some entertainment in a different environment.

Take a Long Bath

A warm soak in the tub can ease your mind for a bit and relax any tension you have in your body. Draw yourself a nice bath, and add some bubbles or epsom salts to make it extra special and therapeutic.

Spend Time Outdoors

Remember to step outside every day and get your daily dose of Vitamin D–this is crucial when spending time with a sick loved one who may not spend much time outside of the home.

Let the weight lift off your shoulders as you take a walk in nature and enjoy the fresh air. If you like to partake in outdoor activities, like a sport or recreational hobby, set aside some time for that too.

Go Out for a Meal

Take yourself out to your favorite restaurant for comfort food, or be adventurous and dine at that little place around the corner you have always wanted to try. Treat yourself for the day and have a good time doing so.

Lose Yourself in a Book

Sometimes when life gets hectic, it’s easy to make excuses and not do the things we want to do for fun–like reading! Set aside an hour to dive into a good book. Reading can keep you present in the moment, and expand your knowledge at the same time.
